Do you really seriously think that all the experts are wrong and there's a huge conspiracy among them? As opposed to you simply getting it wrong?

Please take a moment and seriously consider whether you're qualified to write a book on this topic. For anybody with any level of expertise, it's an easy question to answer. Sadly, you're not one of them.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06439479594928362171noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256131156058173921.post-55493720998892617662021-10-30T16:12:01.079-04:002021-10-30T16:12:01.079-04:00Nicholas Wade is not a scientist, he's a scien...Nicholas Wade is not a scientist, he's a science journalist. Mere questions about the origin of SARS-CoV-2 that might point to a lab leak have been treated for more than 18 months as either coming from people who wear tin foil hats or from racists. China has pushed the racist issue from the start and has now moved on to arguing that likely the virus was imported to China on frozen meat from somewhere else which is nonsense and without any evidentiary foundation. Race and racism have nothing to do with the issues here. The problem is we don't know what was done in the two major labs in Wuhan where this infection first made itself known and China is refusing to either produce lab records or even allow its scientists to answer basic epidemiological questions. Scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the Wuhan CDC have been dragging bats and samples from bats found all over China into their labs. There is good pictorial evidence that they have not handled these animals with due care. The lab leak history in China is not good. Even Xi Jinping has recently acknowledged that by imposing new rules about biosafety. Nicholas Wade's piece clearly passed the editorial inspection of those in charge of the Bulletin of American Scientists. The editors would not have published it if they did not believe the points he made are relevant and deserving of significant attention. And that's why it got significant attention. I am familiar with some of Wade's earlier work, some of it good, some of it not. I have not read his 2014 book. I agree with American anthroplogists who long ago removedrace as a category from the annals of science. If you'd read my previous work, including Bones: Discovering the First Americans, you'd know that. But that doesn't mean everything Wade has written must be deleted because he wrote a book that tries to link race and intelligence. James D. Watson also did the same, making comments so awful he was removed from his position at Cold Spring Harbor University which he helped found. But we don't wipe out from our minds everything else he has had to say about the organization of the DNA molecule and we don't forget that he helped to organize the Human Genome Project which has helped us understand so much. Please deal with the facts and the arguments. Name calling is not argument.ELAINE DEWARhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05227015821228599117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256131156058173921.post-38013321095482533132021-10-30T15:23:15.001-04:002021-10-30T15:23:15.001-04:00"When Brown asked Rasmussen why, if my book i..."When Brown asked Rasmussen why, if my book is riddled with errors, the well-known science writer and editor, Nicholas Wade, had praised it, she replied that Nicholas Wade should be ignored on the grounds that a book he wrote in 2014 defines him as a racist. (Racist is a word she hurls around fairly frequently, along with the epithet grifter.) Wade's views on the subject of intelligence, the subject of his book, are beside the point. The article he wrote in the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists-- describing, among other things, his concern about how leading scientists tried to label as conspiracy theorists all who raised the possibility that SARS-CoV-2 leaked from a lab--finally made it possible for leading major media in the US to publicly consider the question. Instead of speaking to Wade's points, she used a vile name to try to write him off."

I'm not well versed enough in virology to really comment on anything else here, but this paragraph is absurd, and makes me seriously question the rest of what you've written. To say this either you yourself are unfamiliar with Wade's work, or you're racist enough to agree with him. It absolutely is relevant to a person's credentials as a scientist that they have previously published a piece of unsupported, conspiratorial race science. The most shocking thing about his book was that he actually focused on skin colour instead of committing the act and breaking out the calipers.

Why on earth you would associate with and defend this man's racial propaganda as "views on intelligence" is beyond me. Especially when I'm sure you know how much of the discourse on China's scientific practices during the pandemic has been informed by racism and racists. Surely if you want to be credible here to the public you'd be staying as far away from this man as possible. Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00951867995034383903noreply@blogger.com
